Well if you're new to this site or have just found out about the South Hazelton Community Association, let me start by welcoming you!
We are a volunteer based Association who hopes to improve the amazing community we are fortunate enough to call home.
Currently we have several great projects in the works and they are as follows:
1: Trails - Enhancing and developing the trail network throughout South Hazelton and developing a Heritage trail that will go from behind the old KFP mill to the Seeley/Chicago Creek trail that takes people down to the beautiful Skeena River. This site is where a large loading dock and buildings used to be located in the days of the paddle wheelers that travelled the Skeena. It is not only a unique part of local history but it is also a beautiful hike, a wonderful picnic location and the home to some phenomenal fishing. The trails will start at the South Hazelton Ball Park and follow existing trails along the highway to Powell Ave before picking up on the others side of Aldous and heading into that trail network. There is long term plans to hook this trail up with the several that go over Seeley Lake mtn and come out at the Lake. This is a five year plan and this year with phase one we will be working on a few sections of existing trails such as that near Powell, that are in bad shape.
2:  Legion - The current state of the Legion in South Hazelton is unfortunately, not salvageable. Part of the side building collapsed this year with the snow and someone has really made a mess in there trying to burn things. We had a contractor come out and look at it and while there is a fair amount of salvageable material such as the roof and a lot of the wood, the building itself is now a safety hazard. It was the Associations hope that we could save the stage and build a cover over it but after meeting with the contractor he suggested using what material could be saved and build a new smaller stage facing the ball park. We are now waiting on quotes for this project and will be talking to the Regional District about how to proceed.
3: Ball Park - The ball park is also in dire straights with the bleachers, announcers booth, dugouts and fence needing repair. We believe we have enough donated wood to fix all of this in the spring but we really, really need volunteers to help.
4: Softball - It is our belief that the entire area would greatly benefit from bringing softball back to the Hazelton's. We are hoping to create two youth teams (age 4-7, and 8-12) as well as a women's team and at least two mixed adult teams. We would use both the South Town ball park as well as the New Hazelton Park for games and tournaments for May, June and part of July and will be talking with surrounding communities such as Moricetown, Smithers and Terrace to get games happening. We are looking for sponsors, players and volunteers to help with this project.
So if you or anyone else you know is interested in volunteering in anyway, shape or form, we would LOVE to hear from you. You don't have to attend SHCA meetings and if you send your email address we will be able to update you and add you to the volunteer list. It will take a lot of people, hard work and dedication to make these projects come to fruition but we are confident our community has what it takes.
To send in your questions, sign up for volunteering or for any other issue or concern you wish to keep confidential, please go to the page marked "Other" at the top and you will see a comments section that you can fill out. Or simply leave a comment below.
Thanks for your time, have a great day!
